Boston Club

Interview with Mr. Sweigart, one of the advisors of the Boston Club
What is the Boston Club?
Boston Club has been around for about 25 years. There are about 65 students and 10 adults involved this school year. “…Boston Club is a group of students that will go up to Boston, Massachusetts and tour historical sites related to what we studied in history as well as things that may have been studied in LA class.”
What are the requirements to be in Boston Club?
“[The] first thing you have to do is write a letter about why you want to be in Boston Club, sign a contract that says that you are going to act appropriately as a student, maintaining good grades… do a book report, also going to have to work with [your] roommates on a HEAT exam about famous authors in Boston. [You] also have to do a speech about something in Boston as well as complete a ten-hour-project.”
What do you hope kids learn from the experience?
Kids will learn to work together with their roommates, and they will work on material outside of class to earn a spot on the trip.
What do former students say about the trip?
“A lot of students remember…. The bus ride, because it is a 9-hour bus ride up and a 9-hour bus ride back, and the food that we ate. Every student has a different memory of the trip, and all the work that they had to do…” Students agree that it pays off in the end.
Anything else you’d like to say?
Mr. Sweigart wants everyone to know that Star Wars is coming out on December 15 and everyone should get a ticket. But, in all seriousness, he asks seventh-graders to seriously consider joining Boston Club next year and see if they are up to the challenge.
