EIMS Media Center
Staff Writer: Abby
This summer EIMS got a brand-new media center! This includes new books, technology and a 21st century spin on the Makerspace. So, we went to Mrs. Gerlach, the librarian, for her opinions on the new media center.
“What can you tell us about the new media center?”
“The new media center project began about a year ago. At that time, there was a team of administrators who planned what was needed in the space. Once they decided what they wanted, they included students on the ideas for lounge furniture and carpet. The new media center is open all day long and students are able to visit with their teachers.”
“What would you say the theme of the new media center is?”
“The theme of the new media center is contemporary industrial.”
“How do you want students to feel or behave in the new media center?”
“Students can use the space for independent learning, whole-class instruction, and group learning. Teachers access the space with their classes to do projects and alternative learning. Spaces are available for students to work as groups or on their own. It is the hope that students feel as though this is a safe space where they can extend their learning opportunities.”
“Was there anything major that factored into the re-development of the media center?”
“The three major things that factored into the media center are the learning lounge and stairs, new Makerspace wall, and audio/visual rooms. These were the items we worked to include in the plans.”
“How do you think students will react to the new media center?”
“It is the hope that students will like the space and respectfully use it to extend their learning. For the most part, students in 7th and 8th grade have the opportunity to use the space during enrichment and PASS. They also will have opportunities in which their teachers will bring them to the media center for special projects. With the new space comes a new opportunity and a chance for students to meet and exceed both academic and behavior expectations. We hope they rise to the occasion.”
“What’s your favorite part of the new media center?”
“My favorite part of the new media center is the small white room because I like podcasting and this room is perfect for that.”
After visiting the media center for both my science class and language arts class I can personally say that it has something for everyone and I think that a lot of the students will take advantage of the new opportunities they have with the new media center.
