If the Shoe Fits
2017 Fall Play
Article By Rebekah E
528 Theatre performed their play, If the Shoe Fits, by Karen Woodford and published by Pioneer Drama Service, Inc on November 2, 3, and 4. The overview of the play is “Prince Owen is depressed. He’s ready to go to college and study computers (After all, the Kingdom of Kravitz is the only kingdom without a webpage!), but tradition dictates that he attend a ball in honor of his graduation and choose a bride. All the eligible girls in the kingdom will be there, including the Royal Fan Club. Will the prince marry Cinderella, who just wants to get away from her wicked stepmother’s house and study music? Or will the evil Valda, with the help of the Python Gang, successfully kidnap the prince and replace him with a mechanical duplicate? With a king who’s a stickler for tradition, a town crier who hates his job and a fairy godmother straight from the employment agency, this modern twist of an old favorite is sure to provide a rollicking good time for cast and audience alike.”
I went to a rehearsal and managed to get some interviews.
Lily Montgomery (8th grade), who played Queen Celeste, liked her part because “I have power over people.” Her favorite part of the show was when she fake cries.
Kyle Emery (8th grade), who played the prince, liked his part because he had a fan club. His favorite part of the show was the dancing scene because “One, I don’t know how to dance and two, I don’t know how to dance.”
Mattie Walker (8th grade), who played Valda, said she liked her part because she liked “getting to embrace my evil side. It gives me a feeling of empowerment.” Her favorite scene was the first scene because “that is when I get to show the audience my true character.”
Hudson Ulrich (6th grade), who played Python, said he liked his part because “I get to yell at people and be evil---the true side of me.” His favorite part of the show was when “We [the gang] get to lounge around.”
The cast consisted of 29 students from grades 5 through 8 who rehearsed every Monday through Thursday for almost two hours a day after school. Eleven students were in support roles such as stage crew, lighting crew, sound crew, set painting, and costume assistants.
This production of If the Shoe Fits was directed by Mr. Dan Clark, a retired EASD teacher, who is assisted by Mrs. Mandy Ulrich, costumes, Mrs. Sue Izydorczyk, Set Painting, Mr. Josiah Ebersole, Student Director, Mr. Bradon Mulchay, Student Director Mentor and Miss Marissa Shirk, Sound Board Mentor.”
