Renaissance Fair Field Trip
Staff Writer: Sophia
The Renaissance period lasted from the 14th century to the 17th century. It is one of the most important events that happened in European history. Because the Renaissance period is so important, students at Ephrata Middle School learn how people lived during this time period.
One way Ephrata Middle School students get to experience life during this period is by visiting the Renaissance Faire. The field trip is informative yet laid back because classmates walk around together and there is nonstop entertainment. Because classes are missed while on the field trip, students are responsible for making up all missed work. Another drawback of attending the field trip is the admission fee along with the forms that parents of attending students must complete.
Ephrata Middle School student participants are prepared prior to the field trip by attending meetings. These meetings inform students with what to expect at the fair, events they should participate in, and project objectives. The project is a requirement for those attending the event and it will help students with background information about the Renaissance period. The project consists of designing either a heraldry (shield), designing a poster, or participating in a theater competition. Prizes are awarded for each category. For those who compete in the theatre competition, the students first compete against others in our school. The person who wins first place gets a chance to compete at the fair.
A Language Arts teacher, Mr. Miller, is involved with orchestrating the event. He recommends for students to go to the fair to experience it for themselves, and he attends the fair annually himself. Those who attend the fair get to see a variety of demonstrations that occurred during that period. Some examples of demos onlookers may see include, sword-making, jousting, human chess, glass blowing, royal quart Q&A, and music around the ages.
The importance of the students going to this event is to learn more of what the Renaissance period meant to Europe and about the people in it. Adding to that, this knowledge can help students in other classes. An example is social studies class and language arts class. Students can learn more about Shakespeare who was a big influence during this time. Adding on from that, after visiting the Renaissance Faire, you could do a post-project (second project) that will allow you to go next year in 8th grade if you are a 7th grader. To conclude this, the Renaissance Faire is a fun way to learn about the Renaissance period and Shakespeare than from a book. Mr. Miller even said, “You can learn more from a trip like this than simply from a book.”
