Reading Olympics

The 2019-2020 school year is the second year for our school to compete in the Reading Olympics. For this year, there are three different teams with about 12 students on each team. If you are interested in reading and discussing books and would like to join, there is no application process. “Once you join, you make a commitment to do your part to help the team by reading and discussing the books,” states Mrs. DeRise, one of the teachers offering the Reading Olympics opportunity.
Just like any other group or club, there are teachers who work as advisors. For this year, there are 4 different teachers participating in the Reading Olympics, and they include Ms. Young-7th and 8th grade, Mrs. Piersol-Miller- 6th grade, Mrs. Gerlach- Coordinator, Mrs. Goss-6th grade, and Mrs. DeRise -8th grade. The teams of students usually meet regularly and share about their books and answer some practice questions. The meets are usually in the coach’s rooms and are at lunch time. The teams decide when they meet.
The goal that the students are trying to work toward is to read, summarize, and share information about all 44 books, so then everyone will have the ability to answer questions. The competition is held at the IU13 from the time 9:00-12:00 in April. The main idea for this competition is that teams from different schools compete to answer a variety of questions about the books that they have read.
The rules for the club is to make sure you do your part and read about the books and share the information that is provided so that everyone can try to answer the questions correctly. The meaning behind this organization is to share a love for reading and to engage in friendly competing.
