Mounts Melodic
by, Riley
Chorus is an important elective for students to have here at Ephrata, as it allows students to work together to bring stunning pieces of music to life phenomenally. However, there are some who wish to go even further to better their vocals. Luckily, Ephrata’s music department has provided us an opportunity to do just that.
Mounts Melodic is an additional chorus that students can join either by audition or invitation. Directed by Mrs. Ohlinger, this musical group works on more challenging musical pieces. Intricate harmonies are woven together to create striking sounds to please the ear. Rehearsals are every Tuesday after school, stretching until 3:45. They take place in the auditorium to work on projection and to illuminate the room with their vocals as to hear everyone’s harmonies work together.
In all, there are thirteen members. The chorus consists of three boys and ten girls, eight of which are eighth graders and five of which are seventh graders.
Due to COVID-19, Mrs. Ohlinger has had to enforce extra precautions to maintain social distancing and to run by CDC guidelines. Members are sat in every other row and every third seat to prevent the spread of the virus. Additionally, concerts will be performed differently. The in-school chorus will be recorded together, while the online students will record themselves individually. Then, Mrs. Ohlinger will then combine the audio to make it sound as though we’re all together.
The holidays are coming up fast, and the chorus is doing well, having had only one rehearsal. A charming melody: Hush; Traditional Spiritual and Carols arranged by Sally K. Albrecht, is in its preparation stages. The song is a mash-up of numerous Christmas classics such as Silent Night and Angels We Have Heard on High. It’s coming along quite well, and I’m sure more intricate pieces will follow.
