Mountaineer Mayhem
by Morgan
On March 15th, 2024, students at the Ephrata Middle School got the privilege to be a part of the first ever Mountaineer Mayhem. Mountaineer Mayhem is a series of games that both seventh and eighth grade compete in. The games consist of Knockout, Teacher Curling, Water Bottle Flip Relay, Bucket Head Toss, Musical Hoops, and a Pipeline Marble Relay. A student from each homeroom was chosen to represent their homeroom as well as their team to earn points. At the end of the day, all the points were counted and the homeroom from eighth and seventh grade who had the most points won and were gifted a Mountaineer trophy. For the first ever Mountaineer Mayhem, the winners from eighth and seventh grade were Ms. Horner’s and Dr. Miller’s homerooms!
Prior to this day, every homeroom has been competing to earn points for their homeroom. There are several ways they can compete to earn points for the homeroom and those consist of the Halloween Costume Design Challenge, tower building, Mountaineer Pride participation, door decorating, and the Mini-Thon faculty-student basketball game. Depending on the activity, points will vary, but every single homeroom has been collecting points to lead up to Mountaineer Mayhem! Near the 80’s wing, there is a leader board that shows what place every homeroom was in.
Let’s ask eighth grader, Esther, some questions about Mountaineer Mayhem and see her take!
What was the most exciting part about Mountaineer Mayhem?
“The part that excited me the most was cheering other people on that were taking part in the competitions. When certain songs came on and everyone ran out into the middle of the gym to dance, it was super fun to all come together and have a blast. I also enjoyed listening and dancing to the music, shoutout DJ OHLINGER!”
What was it like partaking in the games in front of the whole school?
“During Mountaineer Mayhem, I participated in the Bottle Flip representing Team N. At first, I was a little bit nervous because I thought about everyone’s eyes being on us. Once the game got started, I didn’t pay attention to the crowd and focused on winning. Even though my team didn’t win the bottle flip, I still had a lot of fun cheering and encouraging teammates.”
What would you change about Mountaineer Mayhem for next year?
“One thing I would change about Mountaineer Mayhem is the games. I feel like we could’ve had more interactive games that required more competitiveness. Some games I would’ve enjoyed playing are things like silly relays, Pictionary, or Capture the Flag.” --Esther Y.
As it goes to show, the first ever Mountaineer Mayhem was a complete success! I and many other Ephrata students had a lot of fun having the privilege to participate in such an amazing event. Although, all of eighth grade will not be able to partake in it again next year, it still left everyone with a special memory. Although, the upcoming eighth graders can look forward to this event since they will be staying in the Ephrata Middle School.
