Computer Science

The Computer Science department has some new opportunities this year for students at Ephrata Middle School, with new and upgraded classes. Last year, seventh graders could take Scratch, a class with block programming software. In this class, block programming enabled students to create games and stories! This year, a continuation of that class is available---Scratch 2.0 for eighth graders. Ms. Brady, an EMS computer science teacher who created these courses, realized that some people did not enjoy the block programming, so she decided to create a Computer Science Language class. In this class, students learned about web design with the HTML coding language and they created Python and Java files. Ms. Brady’s web design Java expertise helped significantly with the making of this class. She made the curriculum all by herself!
In a way, the Ephrata Area School District is ahead of the game. The school district was interested in exposing their students to a world of computer science, which is full of logic and finding solutions. Recently, there has been a shortage in the number of people qualified for computer science jobs. Pennsylvania has just recognized computer science education as vital, accepting the necessary standards for this kind of important education. Due to technological improvements that are quickly growing, more jobs using computer science will be created. If you know computer science, then you are ahead of the game and can get a jump-start on future jobs.
Ms. Brady was asked why computer science was important. A tenth-grade computer science class in high school opened her eyes to the world of computer science, to the opportunities and the satisfaction of getting a program to work. She enjoys the logic and process of creating code. With coding, you can design websites, do network servicing, create apps, and do electronic servicing on websites like her guest speaker in one of her classes.
Ms. Brady states that: “Computer science is important because it helps students to think critically and come up with creative solutions.”
